With the little man now 3-years old, his curiosity and interest in everything is increasing by the minute! I’m constantly looking for new activities, crafts, ideas, etc to keep his mind stimulated. I recently called up one of my teacher friends to get ideas of what type of activities she has in her classroom. She told me I could stop by her classroom after school was out one day to look at what she had to offer. As I walked into the room, I noticed a bunch of large clumps of playdough in one section of the room. She told me how the kids are learning about space and had made “moon rocks” out of the dough. Definitely looked like an activity my son would enjoy!
As I took home the instructions she gave me for homemade playdough, and gathered ingredients, I was thinking about how much fun my son would have creating these moon rocks. Moon makes me think of space… space makes me think of galaxy… and since I’m such a Marvel nerd, galaxy makes me think of the upcoming film GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY! Now my son is a huge fan of the Avengers Assemble cartoon. If you’ve been watching lately, you know that the Guardians have started to make a crossover appearance. Needless to say, he is now a Guardians fan!
So here I present to you what my friend refers to as Galactic Dough… but we are going to call it Galaxy Playdough in honor of the upcoming GUARDIANS film!
Ingredients
2 1/4 cups of flour
2 cups of water
Black, blue, or purple food coloring
Black, blue, or purple glitter
1 cup of salt
1 tablespoon of cream of tartar
1 tablespoon of cooking oil
Directions
First add the food coloring of your choice to the 2 cups of water. The more you add in, the darker in color your dough will appear. For this batch I mixed in both blue and purple. Add the water and cooking oil together in a pain and heat on medium.
In a separate mixing bowl, add 2 cups of the flour (saving 1/4 cup to the side), along with the salt and cream of tartar. Mix the dry ingredients together.
Once the dry ingredients are mixed, add them to the liquids that are heating on your stove top. You may want to lower the heat at this point. Stir and mix together until the mixture starts to thicken.
Let the dough cool, and then gradually add in that last 1/4 cup of flour. You may not need it all, so add in a little bit at a time while you knead the dough to the proper consistency. Adding in the extra flour keeps the dough from being super sticky.
Once the playdough is at the right consistency, add in glitter. What I usually do is pour it in the middle, and then knead and mix the dough, folding it to distribute the sparkle.
Once you are done mixing in the glitter, you’ll start to the shine and sparkle giving the dough that cosmic feel! This will give the dough a nice sheen and galaxy-sparkle.
My son was so excited when I showed him the finish product! He just couldn’t wait to mold and form the Galaxy Playdough into not only moon rocks, but different shapes and figures.
Want your Galaxy Playdough to last long? Store the playdough in an air-tigth container or in a ziplock bag with a moisten paper towel. If the playdough gets too dried, just knead often with moisten hands with water. This should help the playdough last longer for several play sessions!
