My son and I are big fans of the Guardians of the Galaxy series, both in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and on Disney XD! I was thrilled back when Marvel Studios announced there would be a Vol 2. in Phase 3. Just a little over 2 months to go till GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 hits the big screen on May 5. In the meantime, we’ve been working on all sorts of space, galaxy, and Guardians themed-projects. Today I’m sharing with you a DIY Galaxy Night Light tutorial! My son had previously created this project at one of his camps… so we decided to recreate it at home to share with you all!
The supplies are simple. You just need a mason jar (or really any clear jar), heavy duty alum foil, a battery operated light, and something sharp like a fork or toothpick (or fondue fork in our case).
Cut the heavy foil to fit the size of your jar. It’s okay if there is still excess. You can trim that later.
Now take your toothpick and create little holes in your piece of foil. Feel free to make them scattered and in random patterns! If you are using a fork, just one of the outside prongs to poke holes. I think this was my son’s favorite part!
Once you’ve finished that part of the project, place the foil in the jar. Use a spoon to smooth out the sides of foil, so that it takes the form of the jar. This can be a little difficult, so it usually works best if the adult does this part. Even using two spoons at a time can help.
Then you can take scissors and trim any foil that may be hanging over outside of the jar.
Now once that is done, take your battery operated light and simply place it at the bottom of the jar! We used a single light for this tutorial, but there are cool string LED lights you can use as well that I’ve seen in stores. Some of them come in different colors, giving these night lights an even cooler effect!
Now for the final result… a cool night light that looks like a galaxy of stars in a jar! So simply to make, and your kids will have a blast knowing that they created their very own night light.
As for my son though, he likes playing with his jar during the day. He thinks it looks like a “smooth meteor.” And sure enough… this “meteor” always makes an appearance when we play Guardians of the Galaxy together!
