Disney’s live action adaption of Madeleine L’Engle’s classic novel, A WRINKLE IN TIME arrived in theatres two weekends ago. While I usually love to enjoy movies during their opening weekend, my schedule didn’t allow me to see the film till this past Sunday. Featuring an all star cast of Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Chris Pine, the film introduces newcomer Storm Reid, to the big screen, as the young heroine of this tale, Meg Murray. Now while it had been years since I read the book in my fifth grade reading class, I was quite excited to see Disney present another action-adventure that the whole family can enjoy. A WRINKLE IN TIME tells the story of how Meg travels through dimensions of time and space to rescue her father from a negative energy preventing him from escaping a distant planet.
Here are just a few of my favorite reasons why I think you should go see A WRINKLE IN TIME…
Reasons to See A WRINKLE IN TIME
Empowering Message for Young Girls (and Boys!) – Oh Middle School. At times it can be awkward phase, where one questions if they fit in, or are they an outcast. This film touches that topic in showing how Meg deals with bullying as she is teased by a popular girl at her school.
Meg not only finds the strength to set out on the journey of finding her father and never giving up, but also how to be confident. Meg not only becomes secure in who she is, but also squashes her self-doubt and embrace her “faults.”
Meg isn’t the only one you see become empowered and welcome personal growth. Her friend Caleb, learns to stand up for himself as he deals with pressure from his father to be “perfect.”
PG Family Friendly Adventure – I admit, walking into the film I wasn’t sure if my Marvel/Star Wars obsessed six year would enjoy a more family-friendly tale about a middle school girl. Bottom line, he did! Of course his favorite scenes were Meg facing off against The It, but what can I say, he’s a boy who loves action sequences! It is always refreshing as a parent, to find a PG movie that keeps him entertained and involved in the story line, that he can also invite his friends to watch with him.
Beyond Amazing Special Effects and Visuals – While reading A WRINKLE IN TIME, I was able to put together images in my mind, of how I envisioned the dimensions and universe. I was in awe of how they incorporated the special effects with the real world locations. You will walk out the theatre wanting to book a flight to New Zealand that day!
Representation of Diversity – I give Disney a huge thumbs up to the diverse representation of different races in the film. Meg comes from an interracial family: her father is Caucasian and her mother is African-America, both brilliant scientists.
Brought lovingly into the mix is her adopted brother, Charles Wallace, who appears to be of Hispanic heritage. The Murray family is absolutely beautiful, inclusive, and strong in their love for one another.
Overall I found A WRINKLE IN TIME to be a visually stunning family adventure that everyone can enjoy. Of course the positive and empowering message is the main reason I urge you and your family to see this film!
