After the success of THE LEGO MOVIE (and THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE), we were psyched to learn that a sequel was in the works! THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART finally opens this weekend to LEGO fans across the nation. We were able to screen the film earlier this week, watching as the heroes of Bricksburg unite once again for an action-filled adventure!
The film takes place five years later, in the aftermath of Taco Tuesday. The ending of the first film marked the arrival of LEGO DUPLO, which very much posed a threat! In the past five years, the DUPLO invaders “from outer space”, have wrecked havoc and turned Bricksburg into a a post-apocalyptic wasteland (obviously inspired by MAD MAX!). Emmet still maintains his happy-go-lucky cheerful attitude, while everyone else seems to adapt to the state of their city and fight to survive.
The action picks up when “invader” General Sweet Mayhem arrives and kidnaps Batman, Lucy, Benny, Metalbeard, and Unikitty, taking them to Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi in the Systar System, who intends to marry Batman! Now it’s up to Emmet to not only save his friends, but once again test his Master Builder skills. Along the way he meets Rex Dangervest, who decides to help Emmet on his quest.
Without giving away too much of the plot points, let me go into my top reasons of why I really enjoyed this film!
Top Reasons to See The Lego Movie 2
Catchy Music – How long did you have Everything Is Awesome stuck in your head after viewing THE LEGO MOVIE? Well get ready for it to not only get stuck in your head again, but there are some new tunes featured in the film that are just so… well… catchy! Enter Catchy Song. Literally, it is called Catchy Song. And with a lyric like “This song’s gonna get stuck inside your head,” you just know Catchy Song is the absolute correct title.
Pop Culture References – Just like the first film, THE LEGO MOVIE 2 is packed with pop culture references, Easter Eggs, and tributes to other films. Apocalypseburg itself is an obvious tribute to MAD MAX and PLANET OF THE APES. Even Rex Dangervest, who is a spaceship pilot / dinosaur trainer, pays homage to Chris Pratt’s (the voice of Emmet) other famous roles of Star Lord (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY) and Owen Grady (JURASSIC WORLD). It’s so much fun to see how many references you can catch while watching the movie!
Familiar Characters – Emmet, Lucy, and Batman all return, along with Benny, MetalBeard, and Unikitty. But you’ll also see many other familiar faces from the first film… like Superman and Green Lantern! Even Lord Business makes an appearance.
The Message – The film has a positive message of staying true to who you are, and the importance of valuing your friendships and family. There is a point in the film where Emmet allows himself to change in ways of how he thinks others want him to be. I think it’s really important for kids to see these lesson plays out and understand why you should stay true to who you are!
Entertaining Family Fun – I love that THE LEGO MOVIE 2 has something for everyone! I like to think that it is geared towards both kids and adults. There are a number of jokes that kids won’t understand, but adults will certainly appreciate. At the screening, all three of us really enjoyed the film. I can tell you its the perfect family movie. Definitely entertaining and fun!
Overall we really enjoyed this laugh-out-loud film! Let’s be honest, THE LEGO MOVIE was awesome. It was such a fun and had a unique concept. I imagine that coming up with a sequel to match was no easy task! However, I think the team at Warner Bros. did an AWESOME job. It’s definitely a movie you don’t want to miss!

We plan on seeing it this week as my son has been waiting on it to come out. Although I think I will rent one before we go so we can refresh our memories on what happened in it and be ready for 2. Even though I know we don’t have to watch 1 to understand 2. I just like to do that when seeing sequels.

I love films that have little sneaky references to other movies or pop culture buried in their script or scenery. Things like that can make a kids movie a lot more fun for adults.
