Shark Week

Ready for Shark Week? Baby C brought out his Shark towel just for the occasion!
So last night 9pm EST, Shark Week started on the Discovery Channel!  While I don’t think most of the programming is appropriate for the little ones, there is still some fun they can enjoy.  The Shark Week website has live feed from the “Ocean Voyager” exhibit at the Georgie Aquarium in Atlanta, GA.  There is also a section of games to play!  Though most programming appears geared towards adults/teens, Shark City with Andy Samberg appears to be fun!  Though the show won’t air till August 4th, from the promos it appears to be more on the fun side and focused on the life of sharks.  Do you and your family watch Shark Week?  What’s your favorite show?

Dean & DeLuca 2011 Spice Guide

Not sure about which spices to use in what dish or for what flavors?  Lucky for you, Dean & DeLuca just published their 2011 Spice Guide!  Lots of information and its FREE!

What are your favorite spices to cook with?  My personal favorite is Cayenne Red Pepper.  It gives any dish a nice kick.  Now I know this may sound weird to some, but my latest favorite is to cover a filet of salmon with cayenne (with a some hot red pepper flakes on top too), and bake it.  The filet just soaks up the spicy flavor!  Delicious!

Homemade Playdough Recipe

Looking for a homemade Playdough recipe?  The Frugals Girls have a great one!  I have yet to try this one, but several moms in my local group have, and their kids loved it.

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 cup Flour
  • 1 cup Water
  • 2 tsp. Cream of Tartar
  • 1/2 cup Salt
  • 1 tbsp. Vegetable Oil
  • Food Coloring
  • Optional: Vanilla or Peppermint Extract, or Pumpkin Pie Spice

What You’ll Do:

  • Mix Together all ingredients {except food coloring} in saucepan
  • Optional: Add in a splash of Vanilla extract to make it smell yummy. Or… for more fun scents: add in some Peppermint extract to the ‘Green’ playdough you’re making, or Pumpkin Pie Spice to the ‘Orange’ playdough you’re making!
  • Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly.
  • As soon as the mixture begins to thicken, add in food coloring. Continue to stir.
  • Mixture will begin forming into a solid, and gathering on spoon.
  • Remove from heat to cool, then remove from saucepan to cool on wax paper, plate, etc.
  • Store in freezer ziploc bag. Then, you can even place the bag in a dark container, or in the fridge… to make it last even longer!

If it starts to get dry after several weeks, try adding a few drops of water into play dough to extend it’s shelf life.
