Ever have those days where you just need to find the best way to release your stress? For me, I like to run. Yes, running is actually a huge stress reliever! It’s actually something I look forward to doing and I even get excited about races. Did you know that winter is actually one of the most popular times to start training for a marathon? Many marathons start in the spring, and to go the distance, you should always train your body. I have many friends who are starting their training next month, so I thought why not create a gift basket for my runner friends to help them jump start their training journey.
When think about what to put in the baskets, typical gifts like socks and blister protection jumped to mind. However I thought why not add something as a treat to enjoy for when they finish training sessions? I recently was at Sam’s Club and discovered these amazingly delicious goodnessknows® snack squares. At only 150 calories a serving, I knew this was the perfect snack to add to the baskets. Why not use a little goodnessknows® to achieve greatness, such as completing a marathon?
Tips on How to Get Your Child Into Running!
All opinions are my own.
At three years old, I’ve noticed my son’s normal energetic levels have increased to “OMG, WHERE IS HE GETTING ALL THIS ENERGY!!” Seriously! He’s giving up naps and still can run around like a little mad man. I’m starting to realize more and more the need for him to get outside and burn that energy and wear himself out. It will make bedtime that much easier! This is why I’ve decided to get him into running. Even at his young age, running can quickly become a fun activity that goes beyond just racing around the playground.
Right now my focus is just for my son to find a fun activity where he can not only be active, but feel like he’s made an accomplishment. At older ages, kids will have running tests in school. While my son still has a few years to go, it’s not too early to start preparation!
Moment of Silence for Boston & the Tragic Events of April 15, 2013 ~ #BostonStrong #WeRunTogether
A year ago today, Boston suffered an unimaginable tragedy when cowards attacked the Boston Marathon. This wasn’t just an attack on the City of Boston, but on an international event that brings people from all nations together, whether they love running or not.
Today, Tuesday April 15th, Mayor Martin Walsh invites you to please join Boston in a moment of silence at 2:49 pm (or 1449), to remember the lives lost, the strong survivors, and all those who helped out in any way that they could that day and in the aftermath, especially our first responders and agents.
I have a lot of thoughts on that day, which I plan to share in another post later today. For now I just want to focus on getting the word out about the moment of silence, in hopes that you’ll participate and remember the victims, survivors, and responders.
I was not financially compensated for this posting. Boston is the home of my family, the people I love the most in this world. This is why I’m posting. Opinions are 100% my own.
Phantomrunner’s Virtual Race for SOWF ~ My 10K Results to Benefit the Special Operations Warrior Fund
So last weekend I participated in the Annapolis Running Classic. I had opted to run the 10K course. Now when I signed up for Phantomrunner’s Virtual Race to benefit the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, I had registered for the 5K. However, I figured since I’ll be running a live 10K race, why not use the course to run the 10K for SOWF? The time allotted to run the race for SOWF was from November 23rd to December 7th. Knowing I had a busy schedule with the holiday, it just made sense to run the races simultaneously. With Phantomrunner, you simply log into your RunKeeper account and it automatically submits your race time to the company.
I’ll write about my experience with the Annapolis Running Classic in another post. Let’s chat first about SOWF. If you aren’t familiar, the foundation, they are a nonprofit organization that provides support to the families of fallen and wounded special operations personnel. They have two primary programs. The first is to provide college scholarships to the children of fallen Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations personnel. The other program is provide immediate financial assistance to the families of severely wounded special operations troops. Amazing programs from an amazing organization! When I came across the run where proceeds went to the foundation, I knew I had to sign up.
Now unfortunately I didn’t get my pack from Phantomrunner in time before I ran my 10K. I had wanted to wear my SOWF shirt for the ARC race, but it’s all good. Not the end of the world! To honor SOWF and all the Operators who made sacrifices for our country, I’ve been wear my shirt during my practice jogs.
Now I did complete my challenge to benefit Operation Enduring Warrior, but I’m not happy with my time and I want to see if I can complete the 5K with more weight in my ruck. I have until the end of the year to finish my challenge, but we’ll see if I can squeeze it in. The weather is becoming absolutely awful here, harsher than usual. I have have to rejoin a gym and complete my runs on a treadmill!
As far as other races go, I have one to benefit the One Boston Fund in January, and another with a local moms running club in February. I’m also debating whether to sign up for Warrior Dash in May. This would be my first true mud obstacle course.
Have you participated in a mud race/obstacle course? Which ones do you recommend for beginners?
I’m looking forward to 2014 for runs and races. I’m hoping to run the Inaugural 10K across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, and definitely plan to run the Never Leave a Fallen Comrade 5K at our local base (Fort Meade). Of course I’d like to run more virtual races in additional to live runs when they benefit our military and first responders community. I just need to make sure I don’t get too out of shape during this winter break!
