I apologize for the lack of posts, but I swear I have a good excuse! Today, Virginia was hit with a 5.8 earthquake. Being in Maryland, we felt it too. My family and I are safe, no injuries. Pictures fell off the wall, and items fell off the shelves, but no cracks in our home (that I’ve found), and like I said, everyone is safe.
What started as little tremors, quickly turned into some strong shakes. When you are in a high rise, this makes the building feel like it is just going to sway and collapse. While my co-workers and I were able to quickly run out of the building (which was then evacuated), it is a scary feeling trying to find out if my son is okay, and cell phone networks were down. Luckily it looks like there were no casualties related to this earthquake. Though structural damage appears to be all over.
Maryland is old. Very very old, at least by the United States standards. Many of our towns and cities have historic districts and these buildings are still standing today. It was a shame to turn on the news today and see the damage done, especially in historic Baltimore. Let’s just hope the communities can come together to rebuild and preserve these buildings.
