I received the following information as a blogger via Walt Disney Publications. While I attended an expense paid trip by Disney to the press events for The Good Dinosaur, Inside Out, and Miles From Tomorrowland, all opinions are 100% my own.Hopefully by now you’ve read my blog post on the interviews with Pete Docter and Jonas Riveras, as well as the one with Phyllis Smith and Richard Kind, in honor of the home entertainment release of Disney•Pixar’s INSIDE OUT! So here we are again today, with another awesome chat… this time with Kyle MacLachlan (the voice of ‘Dad’) and Kaitlyn Dias (the voice of ‘Riley’). Don’t forget that INSIDE OUT is available NOW for home entertainment on Digital HD, Disney Movies Anywhere, and Blu-ray Combo Pack!
When we first arrived at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco for the press junket, we were ushered downstairs to watch the adorable Pixar short RILEY’S FIRST DATE?. (Be on the lookout later this week for an interview with the short’s director Josh Cooley and the producer Mark Nielsen!) The short is available as a bonus feature with the home entertainment release of INSIDE OUT. First let me say, this short is HILARIOUS! We could not stop laughing. Any of you with preteens will most likely relate! Riley, now 12, is hanging out at home with her parents, when a boy comes knocking at the door (yes, that same boy from the first film!). The short asks the question… Can Mom’s and Dad’s emotions handle Riley’s First Date????I have to say, it was quite interesting to see Kyle is such a lighter role! He is normally known for his darker roles in television and film. (Did you see him last season on AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D??? Scary!!) So one of the first questions was for Kyle, concerning recent online polls that name his character as the Number One Hottest Disney Dad! Of course we had to ask Kyle if he had a statement about this…
He laughed at the thought of himself as “Hottest Disney Dad.” He noted that he thought we said “Dizzy dads” at first! He thought he would reign for a couple of weeks, but is sure that another “Disney Dad” will come known his status down. He understands the appeal though… “It’s all about the mustache,” Kyle claimed. Now in RILEY’S FIRST DATE? there is a scene where Kyle’s character rocks out to some ACDC. So does Kyle himself enjoy 80s rock music? He does! He thinks ADC is a fantastic band. However, he’s all about the 70s rock of the likes of Led Zeppelin. Yo know, I think I could picture him rocking out to some Zeppelin now that I think about it!
Now Riley and her Dad share a good number of scenes together. But this didn’t necessarily mean that Kyle and Kaitlyn recorded in the studio together. They actually recorded their voices separately, and worked with stand in voice actors. Kaitlyn noted that actually Pete Docter was who she recorded with the most (but of of course she thought it would have been a blast to record with Kyle.) Kyle noted that he actually only recorded with Diane Lane (the Mom) just once! The rest of the time he recorded with Pete too, or Jonas Riveras via video monitor.
So what brought Kyle to the film? “When Pixar calls, it’s hard to say no!” he joked. He noted that “early conversations that I had with Jonas and Pete were really intriguing. I was just curious as to how they were going to tell this story. The collaboration felt really natural, and good.”
Kaitlyn expressed how she was able to relate to Riley a bit in the essence of having to move away from friends. As a child she noted that she had to change schools, and she definitely brought those same emotions to the character of Riley. It was fun to learn that INSIDE OUT was both Kyle and Kaitlyn’s first time voice acting in a feature film! Kyle had previously done voice acting, but nothing on this scale.
What about adlibbing? Kyle said there actually was a little bit of that! The filmmakers allowed room for improvisation, and sometimes they would ask him to do the lines in different variations of tone, reactions, and wording. Kaitlyn agreed that they were able to offer suggestions while recording. She was given freedom of interpretation, with the help of Pete and Jonas.
Both Kyle and Kaitlyn agreed that since the film, their concept of emotions has changed a little. Kaitlyn noted that there are times when she says to herself that “Joy must be at the controls now!” She commented that it “sort of gets into the way you think about your own thoughts.” Kyle agrees, “That was true also in speaking with my son, about it. He would begin to refer ‘oh, my anger side’. So he would recognize the emotion obviously and identify with it, and be able to discern who was sort of guiding his attitude at the time.“So how much of their personalities went into their character? Kyle noted that it was actually a lot really for him! “I just brought in kind of how I relate to my son. I like to think of myself as pretty patient, calm and relaxed. There are moments when anger takes over, but I try not to have any of that in front of my son at all.” Kaitlyn said “Definitely a lot of me, especially in Goofball Island! My mom will attest, too.“
So in reference to RILEY’S FIRST DATE, how does Kyle think he’ll react when your son brings home his first date? He laughed, and quickly noted that he thinks it is different for a boy. However he notes that he probably will not rock out with his son’s date, as his character did with Riley’s date. Kaitlyn noted that while she hasn’t had her first date yet, she hopes that it goes as smoothly as Riley’s! She said her mom will be calm, but her dad can be protective.
We asked in their opinions, is there anything parents should take away from the film. Kaitlyn quickly chimed in, “I’d just say to the parents watching this, make sure that you can recognize when your own child is going through this so that you can make sure that you’re there for them and make sure that they know that you are supporting them.” And advice for the kids? “That it’s definitely best to listen to your parents!” … and us parents agree with you Kaitlyn! Kyle noted that he told her to say that (jokingly). So what’s next for Kyle and Kaitlyn? Well Kaitlyn noted that she would love to continue both into voice acting and on-camera work, but doesn’t have anything lined up at the moment. As for Kyle… he’s reprising his role of FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper. Yes I’m sure all you TWIN PEAKS fans are excited for that!
After the group interview, Kyle and Kaitlyn took a group photo with us bloggers. They were both super personable and it was a great interview.Don’t forget to connect with the film on Facebook and Twitter.
