I can’t believe my little man will be 3 years old in a few months! Times flies by so fast. Lately I’ve been thinking about preschool for next year. I’ve been on the hunt for educational toys that will work with him on numbers, colors, shapes, and of course reading. With so many brands and options out there on the market, sometimes the search can get overwhelming. Luckily I just stick to a few trusted brands who I know delivery great quality toys that offer an educational aspect. One of those brands is LeapFrog!
I recently had the chance to test out their Read with Me Scout toy with my son. His eyes absolutely lit up when he saw this green Pup for the first time! He is really into books right now, so the 5 books that come with the toy was an extra bonus.
Geared towards ages 2-5, I love that Scout aims to teach comprehension, early vocabulary and book and print basics. There are two available modes in Scout: Story Time Mode and Sleepy Time Mode. My son enjoyed both modes thoroughly!
Story Time Mode is to be used when your child would like to read with Scout. I love that Scout asks your child questions as they read the books together. Sleepy Time Mode is great for when your child just wants to sit and relax while enjoying lullabies and quiet time stories. The lullabies will last for 8 minutes before shutting off automatically.
As I mentioned before, the set comes with 5 story books. Titles included are: Pattern Book: Let’s Go Camping, Narrative Book: Let’s Find Scout’s Toy!, Concept Book: Let’s Have a Party!, Rhyming Book: Let’s Cheer Up Eli! and Learn-About Book: Let’s Learn About the Weather!. Scout’s collar has numbers on it, which coordinate with the books via color and number. It was very easy for my toddler to figure out which book he wanted to read and which number to push!
My son was particularly a big fan of the Story Time Mode. Along with the 5 board books, Scout himself features more than 70 different engagement and comprehension questions! For instance, once Scout is done reading a page, he’ll ask your child to pat him on the head. My son definitely got a kick out of this.
In addition to patting Scout on the head, there are 3 other areas that your child can press to engage Scout. If your child presses the right paw which features a music note, Scout will sing to them. Pressing Scout’s left paw which features a bone or the heart on his cheek, causes Scout to say different phrases.
I love LeapFrog’s innovative approach to learning! Read with Me Scout provides way to build early reading skills in your child by exposing them to different storytelling concepts. For instance, the Pattern Book includes rhymes, refrains and repetition to encourage your child to predict what comes next. As for the Narrative Book, it takes your child through a story put together with characters, settings and a sequence of events. The Learn-About Book helps reveal a world through reading, and reinforces the concept that print carries meaning. If you are looking for your child to learn about the sounds of language while building phonological awareness, have them read the Rhyming Book! Lastly, the Concept Book explores concepts like colors to label and classify new information.

I know what I am getting my nephew for Christmas this year!!
My son loves Scout! He even watches him on netflix!! When we saw this in the store he got soooooo excited. He sat down on the floor in the middle of toys r us and took 4 of them off the shelf (2 scout, 2 violet) and sat there playing with them for at least 15 minutes. When I tried to get him to move on to another part of the store a very big tantrum ensued ;). Needless to say, he is getting one for Christmas!!! haha
Thanks for the great review!
