If you enjoyed Disney’s 2014 global box office hit MALEFICENT, I have good news for you! Production has begun on its sequel at Pinewood Studios and on locations throughout the United Kingdom. Reprising their roles are Oscar® and three-time Golden Globe® winner Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning. The dark fairy Maleficent and Princess Aurora are two of Disney’s most iconic characters from the animated classic SLEEPING BEAUTY.
Golden Globe® Award winning, Emmy® nominated and three-time Academy Award® nominated actress, Michelle Pfeiffer (be sure to see her in ANT-MAN AND THE WASP next month!) joins the cast as Queen Ingrith. Also joining “MALEFICENT II” are Academy Award® and Golden Globe nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor and Robert Lindsay. The sequel will also star Harris Dickinson as Prince Phillip.
Additional cast members returning from the 2014 film include: Sam Rileyas Diaval; Oscar® nominee Imelda Staunton as the pixie Knotgrass; Juno Temple as the pixie Thistlewit; and Academy Award® nominee Lesley Manville as the pixie Flittle.
The film is directed by Joachim Rønning, who is no stranger to Disney, as he directed 2017’s PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES. The film is written by Linda Woolverton (“ALICE IN WONDERLAND,” “BEAUTY AND THE BEAST”) and Micah Fitzerman-Blue & Noah Harpster. The producers are Joe Roth and Angelina Jolie.
A fantasy adventure that picks up several years after “Maleficent,” in which audiences learned of the events that hardened the heart of Disney’s most notorious villain and drove her to curse a baby Princess Aurora, “Maleficent II” continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen, as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.
No release date is set, but I am beyond excited none the less!
