Earlier this month I shared with you the trailer for Disney’s PETE’S DRAGON! While I grew up watching the Disney classic, this tale is all new to my son. After watching the trailer though, he couldn’t be more excited for the re-imagining of this cherished family film! Even after screening THE BFG this week, he than asked “can we now go see Pete’s Dragon?” LOL. Inspired by the film, this past weekend we actually made an Elliott the Dragon craft! Check out the easy tutorial below to create your own Elliott for your little on.
Supplies
Green construction paper
Red and orange tissue paper
Scissors
Tape (or glue)
Black marker
Directions
First let’s gather our supplies. As I mentioned above, you can use tape or glue as the adhesive. However I think tape is clean and works better. Definitely less messy!
Now let’s take the green construction paper, and cut out a portion that will cover the entire cardboard toilet paper roll. Use the tape to hold the paper in place so that it is stuck to the roll. Be sure to cut off any excess.
Now place the toilet paper roll on top of the scrap green paper as seen below. Make sure to draw the eyes as well!
Using the roll as a “snout,” draw Elliott’s face on the paper. Don’t forget to give him ears! When you go to cut out his face, you’ll want to leave a “tab” on it, as this will be used to adhere the face to the “snout.”
Fold the tab as above, and slide it into the toilet paper roll. Use the tape to adhere the face to the roll.
Now it’s time to draw the nostrils for the snout. Simply cut out the shape of the nostrils, while leaving a tab similar to the one on the face. Once again, the tab will be used to attached the nostrils to the snout. I let my son use the black marker to draw the holes.
Attached the nostrils in a similar manner to the opposite end of the roll from the face. Once completed, your Elliott should look like the example seen below.
Now let’s make the fire! Take your tissue paper and cut out several strips of red and orange paper. They should be on the thinner side, and you can tailor the ends to a point. Lay a few out, maybe 5 or 6, and alternate red and orange next to one another as seen below. Take a piece of tape to hold them in place.
Using the tape, attach the taped end of the “fire” into the inside of the roll. Repeat this until there is tissue paper “fire” all along the rim of the roll.
Now your Elliott the dragon is complete! All you need now is a little one to blow on one end of the roll so that it looks like Elliott is breathing fire.
This toilet paper roll Elliott is definitely an easy craft and perfect for preschoolers / elementary age kids. Creating this craft is a fun way to get excited for the film PETE’S DRAGON! And speaking of the Disney film…
