While I was in Boston earlier this month, I was able to spend time with my family. I actually headed to my brother’s house to watch the Kentucky Derby. My super creative sister (and sometimes blog contributor) catered the party! A nice touch she added, which is a Kentucky Derby tradition is the Mint Julep Station! Boy were those drinks delicious. I mean, what would a Kentucky soiree be without mint juleps??
I love this idea for as a drink to cool off with on a hot summer day. Fresh mint is a staple for mint juleps! She picked the freshest and most aromatic mint I’ve ever encountered. Nice touch!
She used paper straws which was a nice touch. I love the bright colors and definitely went along with the Kentucky theme. Instead of glasses, why not use mason jars? You can add a little flair by simply tying ribbon around the rim.
Serving multiple drinks? A cue sign is always a nice touch! If your guests are unfamiliar with cocktails, this is a great way to let them know what is available and what ingredients are in each drink.
I think my sister did a great job with the set up! I think I might actually have to hire her to host and cater my next party. I love all the personal touches she created and how she incorporated bright Derby-like colors.
Mint Julep Recipe
Ingredients
Mint leaves (6-8 small ones per drink)
1 tbsp of sugar
ice (crushed)
2.5 oz of bourbon
simple syrup
Directions
Take a tall glass and add mint leaves and the tablespoon of sugar on the bottom. Use a spoon to mash the leaves and sugar together. Then fill with crushed ice. Pour in the bourbon and then top off with just a splash of simple syrup!
Don’t have simple syrup on hand? It’s super easy to make! Pour one cup of sugar and one cup of water in a sauce pan and bring to a boil over medium heat. You’ll want to cook the mixture until the sugar is dissolved. This usually takes about 2 minutes. Then remove the saucepan from the heat and wait for the syrup to cool before using.
Next time you get ready to host your summer soiree, why not consider adding a Mint Julep station and go Kentucky style? Not a fan of bourbon? No worries! You can use the above ideas for any drink station! I’m actually using my sister’s set up for my next party for White Wine Sangria!
So sit back, relax, and enjoy a Mint Julep at your next summer soiree!!
