One of my absolute favorite action movies I saw this year was Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier! It has everything I enjoy in a movie… action, adventure, superheroes, and of course a little eye candy. After screening the film, I knew this was one I definitely wanted to add to my home entertainment collection.
… and guess what? Captain America: The Winter Soldier is out on Blu-ray and DVD next Tuesday, September 9th! What better way to celebrate the release than with a Movie Night right at home? I have some pretty awesome Captain America themed recipes on my blog, but I’m excited to share with you my most recent recipe, featuring one of my favorite candies… M&M’s®!
Earlier this week I headed to my local Walmart to get everything I need to create a delicious recipe that I knew my little Captain America fan would enjoy. Plus I just love Walmart prices, especially when I can use coupons! Upon entering the store, I immediately saw a poster advertising the Marvel film and the exclusive behind the scenes access provided by M&M’s®!While passing the Family Entertainment section, I couldn’t help but notice the COMING SOON signs for Captain America! The Digital Copy is already available, but I decided I rather wait till Blu-ray/DVD so I can watch the film on my big TV in the living room!Once we reached the food aisles of the Super Center, it wasn’t long before I spotted the CANDY aisle as indicated by the sign above. Of course my little guy immediately saw the M&M’s® and let me know which ones he wanted for our recipes!Luckily for me Walmart has a HUGE grocery area of their store and hard to beat prices! I was able to pick up all the other ingredients I need for my M&M’s® Captain America Shield Pie recipe! I’ve included a tutorial below in case you would love to make the pie yourself for a Captain America movie night.
M&M’s® Captain America Shield Pie Recipe
Ingredients
1 box of refrigerated pie crusts, softened as directed on box
3 vanilla pudding cups (3.5-4 oz each)
1 vanilla yogurt cup
1 Tbsp of peanut butter
1-2 bag of regular M&M’s®
1-2 bag of peanut M&M’s®
Directions
Preheat your oven to 450°F. Unroll the pie crust into a 9-inch pie plate. I prefer to use glass. You can either prick the crust or combine almonds and granulated sugar in a food processor or blender. For this recipe, I opted just to prick the crust. Bake 9 to 13 minutes depending on which kind of pie plate you use. The box will have a suggested time. If crust puffs in center, take a wooden spoon and gently flatten the crust back down. Let the crust cool for like 20 minutes.
While the crust is baking/cooling, mix together the pudding and yogurt in a mixing bowl. Add in your peanut butter and mix well! Feel free to use an electronic mixer, though I was able to mix the contents just fine by hand. Side note on the yogurt… Greek yogurt works best for these types of recipes, but if you use plain vanilla, no worries! I’ve made it with both and the “custard” of the pie still turns out fine either way.
Once you’ve created the mixture, poor it into the cooled pie crust and spread around. Usually a flat spoon will work great for this!
Now to create the Captain America shield on top of the pie, I separate the blue and red M&M’s® out of the packages. Using the red ones I alternated both peanut and regular chocolate playing them around the edge of the pie as shown below. This created the red edge of the shield! Then use the blue M&Ms to outline a star. I usually lightly draw a star in the pie using a knife so I can see where the M&Ms will line up. Don’t worry if your star isn’t perfect! It’s still a fun and cool design! Now if you have enough M&M’s®, feel free to fill in the parts of the shield so that the only custard showing through is the “white star”. I’ve made this pie both ways… and with either way you choose, it still looks like Captain America’s shield! For the sake of the tutorial (and since I had enough candy!) I decided to go ahead and fill in the empty space on the shield. Now keep in mind… the longer the M&M’s® sit in the custard mix, the more likely their color dye will bleed into the pie. Not a big deal! My son actually loves that the custard turns blues and red when he enjoys the pie.
Speaking of enjoying the pie… my little super hero most certainly did! As an added bonus, we used the leftover blue and red M&M’s® we didn’t use to bake into some sugar cookies. That way he was able to enjoy some patriotic cookies along with his pie!

What a fun pie! I like that it’s a simple recipe and easy to decorate for any occasion. Our family likes to use M&M’s in place of chocolate chips in cookies. It’s an easy swap and always brings a smile.

Wow! My kids might actually EAT pie if it was a Captain America M&M one ! This is too cute! I have heard such great things about Captain America: The Winter Soldier and I’m excited to watch it. One of my favorite “is it kid friendly” radio guys actually raved and raved about how wonderful and family friendly this movie is, so we’ll definitely be watching it.
And making this pie too! Yum!
