Earlier this month we hosted a giveaway for a pair of tickets to Jimmy Buffett‘s musical comedy ESCAPE TO MARGARITAVILLE at The National Theatre in Washington DC! The show’s run started back on October 8, and continues on through October 13. We had the pleasure of attending the show last night and it was an absolute blast!
Welcome to Margaritaville, where people come to get away from it all — and stay to find something they never expected. ESCAPE TO MARGARITAVILLE is the musical comedy featuring both original songs and your most-loved Jimmy Buffett classics, including “Fins,” “Volcano,” “Cheeseburger in Paradise” and many more. USA Today calls it “A little slice of paradise!” and Entertainment Weekly raves, “It will knock your flip-flops off!”
Escape to Margaritaville Review
ESCAPE TO MARGARITAVILLE centers around carefree crooner Tully Mars. He sings at the run-down hotel bar Margaritaville on an island in the Caribbean. The opening number of License to Chill certainly sets the scene! While Tully is welcoming to all vacationers, he certainly enjoys his time with the visiting ladies!
He soon finds himself mesmerized by Rachel from Cincinnati, who then finds herself mesmerized by his six-pack of abs (and of course getting to know him better!). But theirs isn’t the only lust in the air… the engaged Tammy, Rachel’s friend, finds herself falling for Margaritaville bartender, the loveable, but not-so-smart Brick, (and trying to resist him as well)! Romantic sparks all around!
However at the end of their Margaritaville vacation, the women head back to Cincinnati, despite the love they found… It’s not long before a volcano then threatens to erupt, and Tully and Brick head out to escape the island! And where do you think they find themselves? Well, you’ll need to go see the production, with its talented cast, to find out…
My Thoughts
Even if you aren’t a Jimmy Buffett aficionado, you’ll be sure to recognize some of his hits like Come Monday, It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere, Son of a Son of a Sailor, Margaritaville, and Cheeseburger in Paradise. Those familiar with his tunes, I believe you will certainly enjoy the song selection! I thought the Fins, Why Don’t We Get Drunk, and Volcano numbers were especially fun, while my accompanying fellow Parrothead was a fan of the Cheeseburger is Paradise scene.
I found the show to be packed with high energy fun and silliness, complete with catchy tunes, and a laid-back vibe. Just like you would expect from a Jimmy Buffett musical. You are on Island Time, and the show sets for you to bop your head and yell “Salt, salt salt!”.
Just like no one goes to a Jimmy Buffett concert for a somber experience; no one goes into ESCAPE FROM MARGARITAVILLE expecting an intense, dramatic show. Guests come for a good time! And a good time was had by all.
Pull out your favorite Hawaiian print, slap on a pair of flip flops, and grab a lei! Head on over to The National Theatre to catch ESCAPE TO MARGARITAVILLE!

I love Jimmy Buffet and now Margaritaville is stuck in my mind and I’ll be signing it the rest of the day. I’d love to watch this show. It sounds like lots of fun!
singing, not signing! :)
Oh, what fun!! I love his music. We wear flowered shirts here in Florida all the time, so I am already set.
This would be a fun show to see! I’ve always liked Jimmy Buffet. If this comes to my area, I’d go see it.
We’re huge Jimmy Buffett fans at our house. It’s so funny all of his fans who affectionately call themselves Parrotheads while they dress up in their craziest tropical attire. xx
This looks like such a fun show and an amazing time. I do love the classic song Margaritaville, and would love to hear some of his others.
This looks like a fun play! If I ever can get out there I will. I love watching please like this they’re just fun to see.
Oh, my husband would enjoy this! If only I had known about it soon enough to schedule time off work. It would’ve made a wonderful surprise!
I went to Jimmy Buffets Margaritaville in Jamaica. It was a ton of fun because they were on the beach. The water was crystal clear and the sand was white. It was beautiful. I no longer drink so heading to the bars unfortunately is not my thing.
I feel like my husband would really like this show. he is a a big Jimmy Buffett fan.
This looks like such an amazing experience. I would love to visit DC and check out this show.

It looks like a fun show! My sister works in the DC area and loves Jimmy Buffet. I’ll have to let her know about this.
Oh wow! I want to see this. We used to live in northern KY and Jimmy Buffet would sing at a venue on the river and we’d go on a boat a go listen. Great memories. I actually hung out with him once when I was a teenager he was really cool.
I love all things Jimmy Buffet. I am even considering retiring in one of his communities in Florida! This looks like it would be a fun date night.
