Ever since I took my little one to see Disney’s PLANES on the big screen back in August, I know he’s been looking forward to when he could watch it on his TV here at home. Trust me, I know because he’s been asking… nay… demanding nonstop (don’t you love Terrible Twos?) to watch PLANES for the past 2 months nonstop! I was super excited when the film arrived on my doorstep and I could pop it right into our entertainment system for his viewing. Luckily PLANES is available on a Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy Combo-Pack! Best part? It is out TODAY!
From above the world of CARS, PLANES is a fun animated comedy that has a good share of action and adventure! The film follows the adventures of Dusty, a crop-duster plane, voiced by Dane Cook. Dusty works at Propwash Junction, where he spends his days “dusting crops”, but yet dreams of becoming a high-flying racer. In chatting with director Klay Hall, it was really cool to hear about all the research that went into ensuring that the vehicles of the Junction had that true Midwest agricultural feel to them.
With the support of his friend Chug (voiced by Brad Garrett) and eventually that of Dottie (voiced by Teri Hatcher), who both work at the Junction with him they help him work hard towards his dream. There is a great tale of friendship in the film! I loved that it showed the characters supporting one another and genuinely being happy for their friend’s achievement. What a great message to send to kids!
Though there is an issue… and it’s a big one! You see, despite the fact that Dusty really wants to be a racer, he is actually terrified of heights. Enter Skipper (voiced by Stacy Keach), who is a veteran naval aviator. It takes a little convincing, but Skipper eventually decides to help Dusty in achieving his dream. Working together with hard work and determination, it’s not long before Dusty finds himself competing in a global race around the world with the top aviators of other countries!
I talked about this when I saw the film on the big screen, but right off the bat, one of my absolute favorite aspects of the films is the beautiful scenery. Even on my television the scenes are breathtaking. I understand the film is animation, but the story artists and animators really captured such beautiful landscapes in many of the flying sequences. For instance in scenes that take place in India and Nepal, I feel a sense of serene and calmness. The sequences are not only visually stunning, but emotion of the scenes are definitely translated through the artwork. Just gorgeous!
If serene landscapes aren’t your thing… there is still plenty of action! When I took my son to see the film, those fast flying sequences were his favorite. His face lit up anytime he saw the planes and racers soaring and zipping through the sky. He especially loved Bravo and Echo (appropriately voiced by Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards of Top Gun fame). When I popped in the DVD for us to watch at home, he quickly started “zooming” around the room happily claiming to be a “plane”!
I find PLANES to have a little something for everyone. It is really great to see an animated film with such unique characters who display such depth and personality. I love how the animators created characters that show emotion, even though you might view them as just “machines.” They just seem so real!
PLANES is full of action, adventure, heart, encouragement, and yes, there is even a romantic love story! Plus it also tells a great story of courage and achieving your goals. The tale will teach your little ones to never give up on their dreams, even when they seem impossible.
Bonus Features
Disney’s PLANES is packed with fun bonus features! One of my favorites is the exclusive (and adorable!) Franz’s song. Such a funny little character! There is also Klay’s Flight Plan, which you can find a sneak peek of in my interview with Klay Hall, the director, that I posted earlier this month. I’m a big fan of ESPN’s Top 10, so I was excited to see that Disney included the Top 10 Flyers with ESPN’s Colin Cowherd in the bonus features! Plus there are some great deleted scenes and even a segment to Meet the Racers!
