I’m sure with all my postings these past 2 weeks you know by now that I was able to attend the DELIVERY MAN premiere in Hollywood earlier this month. Fast forward a couple of weeks and guess what? The film is now out TODAY!! Even though I’ve already seen the film, I’m heading to the theater TONIGHT to see it again. Can’t wait!
DreamWorks Pictures’ DELIVERY MAN stars Vince Vaughn, Chris Pratt, and Cobie Smulders. Vince plays the affable underachiever David Wozniak, who is a delivery truck driver his family’s business, Wozniak Meats. In the beginning of the film, David finds out that his “sometimes” girlfriend Emma (played by Cobie) is expecting his first child… )or so he thinks!). To say David is shocked is an understatement. With his reputation of being unreliable, Emma ends up giving him the ultimatum to clean up his act and get it together… or just get out of her life for good.
So back to the whole “expecting his FIRST child” thing. Yeah, that’s not the case. Turns out that his anonymous donations to a fertility clinic 20 years earlier resulted in 533 children. That’s right… David is actually expecting his 534th child! Not only that, but over 100 of his children are suing the clinic to find out David’s identity!
Trying to do the right thing, David turns to his BFF Brett, an overwhelmed father and lawyer. While Bret works to keep David’s identity a secret from his children, he accidentally leaves the identity of the children in David’s hands. David can’t help but covertly insert himself into some of their lives. Since he’s on “the path to do good“… he begins to see himself as their guardian angel, and works to help improve their lives as much as he can.
Prior to screening this film, I thought it may be the typical Vince Vaughn comedy, which I’m a huge fan of. I loved him in movies such as Old School, Dodgeball, and Wedding Crashers to name a few. Trust me… you will still get plenty of laughs from this film! As always, Vince brings his comedic side. The scene where he finds out he fathered 533 children will put you in stitches from laughing so hard!
However, you also get to see a more grounded and emotional acting side of Vince. The movie shows David’s one and one interaction with several of his children. He encounters drug addition, mental illness, career struggles, and physical disabilities. The scenes just tug at your heart strings. Probably my favorite story arch of David relating to his children is the one of him and his son Ryan, who lives in assisted living home. Bring the tissues! You may shed a tear or two…
I have to say though, hands down, one of my favorite characters in the film is Brett. He was such a relatable character! As a parent myself, I understand the hardships of trying to balance a career, parenthood, and social life. I love it when Brett claims that he can say whatever he wants in front of his children because they never listen to anything he says in the first place! As a mom of a 2 year old, I totally get your child never listening to you. I can’t tell you how many times the phrase “Put on your listening ears!” comes out of my mouth each day.
Overall I really truly enjoyed Delivery Man. The film kept me laughing nonstop with Vince’s and Chris’ one-liners. Like I said though, prepare for the emotions. You’ll leave the theater thankful for your family and wanting to give them all a big hug!
