I received the following information as a blogger via Walt Disney Publications. While I’m attending an expense paid trip by Disney to the press events for Avengers: Age of Ultron and Monkey Kingdom, all opinions are 100% my own.
So I’m not going to lie. When I found out we would be interviewing Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth on this #AvengersEvent press trip, it was super hard to contain my excitement! That part of the trip was probably what I was most excited about. And let me say… Chris and Chris did not disappoint! They way they play off of one another kept us bloggers laughing throughout the whole interest. You can tell that their buddy-buddy friendship is genuine.
In AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, Evans returns as Captain America, while Hemsworth reprises his role as Thor. After things go awry with Tony Stark’s peacekeeping program, the villainous Ultron rises to destroy the world. t
The Avengers are known for their awesome action sequences. So of course we just had to ask about their favorite fight scenes. Even though he isn’t in the scene, Evans noted that the Hulkbuster vs the Hulk fight scene looked pretty awesome. Hemsworth on the other hand chose the fight scene at the very beginning of the film. He likes that it shows cuts from each of the individual fight, so that it then looks like one big tracking shot. He’s excited to see the final cut of the the sequence at the premiere of the film.

Do you find something that you discover about your characters each time you put on the costume? Or do you feel like you really know the character by now?
Evans: Well, you know the character but you hope there’s always new challenges. You hope as an actor there’s always a new hurdle to jump in a new arch to kind of discover. The first couple of movies you try to read as many comic books as possible to make sure the built-in audience, the fan base, is going to be satisfied with what you bring to the screen. Then in terms of where the character is going, that’s up to the director. That’s always new and that’s what makes these exciting to come back to. If it weren’t new, it would get old, stagnant and the audience would feel it.
(To Evans) More about really researching the character, do you feel that playing Captain America has made you more wholesome?
Evans: (Jokingly) If that’s even possible. I’m already a Goddamn boy scout!
Do you think that’s changed you as a person at all?

Hemsworth: Unless you’re playing Hannibal Lecter. You want to eat a person.
Evans: Sometimes you get hungry for people…
With a pause, I jumped into ask one of my questions. Of course I only got the words “Did either of you…” out before Evans hilariously interupted with “Did either of you ever eat a person?” He joked that he did, just once in the Philippines, while Hemsworth chimed it that it taste like chicken! Cannibal jokes aside, I was finally able to ask my question…
Did either of you have a favorite superhero growing up?
Hemsworth: Superman was mine. It was probably the first of the superhero films, wasn’t it?
Evans: When you’re a kid you kind of like what you’re given to play with. So I had a Spiderman toy. So that was kind of my thing. I never really watched Spiderman comics but he was my guy. He was battling Ninja Turtles a lot.
So going off of that, if you weren’t playing Captain America, which superhero would you choose to be?
Hemsworth would want to be Captain America, while Evans would want to be Iron Man. He noted that Steve Rogers is such an internal guy, while Tony Stark is the opposite… and gets all the jokes. He loves Iron Man is such a “fun, free, loose guy.” He thinks it would be “any other superhero who gets to be a little more sassy,” nothing that “Cap’s not sassy.” Hemsworth asked Evans if his choice is then the Black Widow. They both jokingly agreed that Evans would look great in the costume.

A 10-year-old fan, who is a victim of bullying, has a question for Hemsworth. He wants to know if you think it’s okay for a boy to have long hair?
Hemsworth: Of course it is. Absolutely. My dad had long hair for years. In fact, he was asked to play for a football team, invited down to a big league in Australian football. It was quite a big opportunity. And the coach said “Yeah, cool but you’ve got to cut your hair,” because he had a ponytail. He said no and walked away. He gave up that dream and did something else, honestly… I think people who are narrow-minded enough to and limited in their thinking, to think that that is an issue, then they’ve got the problem. You wait, in a few years’ time that kid will understand that that other kid has larger problems.
Evans: Anytime I see a kid with long hair I’m like “that kid is so much cooler than anything I have ever was.”
Hemsworth: Girls love long hair so tell him that. He’ll be fine. He’s going to clean up in a few years’ time. And that bully who’s teasing him is going to get nothing.
Do you guys have a favorite moment or favorite thing to do off set, but as your characters?

How much fun was it to have the scene around Thor’s hammer?
Evans: It was a good scene.
Hemsworth: It was great. It was good to see us all in normal clothes and not being superheroes. For me personally Thor can get so kind of stuck being the godly prince or king or whatever he is. It’s nice to be in civilian clothes. What do these guys do when they’re not saving the world? It’s relatable for people in the audience.
For reference, here is that scene:
Do you guys hang out after the movie?
Hemsworth: (Jokingly) We try not to. We try to save it for the screen.
Evans: (Jokingly) I’m truly sick of everybody! No, absolutely.

Hemsworth: I can’t tell you how many people when I was about to do Avengers went “Oh, good luck on that set.”
Evans: Don’t work with Chris Evans.
Hemsworth: The egos, yeah, especially him! I swear to God, I didn’t see any of that and I still haven’t… We got lucky and we do honestly have a great time.
(To Hemsworth) Do you ever kind of go into God-speak every so often?
Hemsworth: Just when things need to get done. No. Just when the lights go off, yeah. (To Evans) Honey?
Evans: Best answer ever. There’s no answer that is going to be better than that one ever. I was going to make a horrible joke about like putting the cap back on the toothpaste. That is so much better. Oh man, I’m not Thor. There it is. That’s the best answer of the day.
Hemsworth: Honey, let’s bring the thunder. Too far? Too far? Let’s make it rain in here.
(Evans and Hemsworth went back and forth on hilarious banter!)

(To Hemsworth) You played so well with Tom Hiddleston, did you feel his absence at all?
Hemsworth: (Jokingly) No. Sick of that guy. When I came into it I remember talking to Tom about this when we were doing Thor 2, right before this film. They are the sort of Yin and Yang. Who’s Thor without Loki? It’s a whole different dynamic. Just as exciting.
Speaking of Tom, I just had to note Tom’s impressions of both Evans and Hemsworth (YouTube it if you have not seen his impressions yet!) They joked that Tom’s impressions of them aren’t very good! Unfortunately neither had an impression of Tom to get back at him.
(To Evans) What aspects of Captain America’s personality are coming from you and what are the most difficult to portray?
Evans: Well I think every character has to come a little bit from you. One of the things I do as an actor is try to adjust who I’m speaking to…I do believe there’s always something that you can tap into for every role because you have to make it your own. You can’t be too foreign off base because you know, you have to make it something familiar. I grew up with a kid named Charlie Morris and you can all right that down because he’ll love it. This kid was an Eagle Scout. You know what it takes to be an Eagle Scout as a kid? This is a kid, who was 18 years old, was going on like his Eagle Scout self. He was just the best guy I knew, just a good guy. So a lot of times you kind of draw parallels to what Charlie would do but the trickiest thing is to try to make him likable. He doesn’t joke, he’s not fun. His not like sassy or loud or anything. So you try to play this guy and not come across as boring, which is the most dangerous thing about the character. It’s fun because it’s not me. I’m a very open guy. I wear my emotions right on my sleeve and this guy is a little more inside himself. That’s what makes it a fun challenge. You do draw on parts of yourself, but I also lean on Charlie quite a bit too.
It was so awesome to meet both Evans and Hemsworth. You can tell they are quite down to earth and are appreciative to be part of this Marvel franchise! They both agreed to take a group photo with all us bloggers!

And now I can say I had my photo taken with the real Thor! Don’t worry Disneyland Pretend Thor… You were still quite cool! It’s just nothing beats the real Thor. I’ll still remember our 10 seconds of photo time together. Oh and since it is ‘Throwback Thursday’….
Just in case for whatever reason you have not yet watched the trailer…
