The CAPTAIN MARVEL trailer FINALLY debuted this week, and who else is beyond excited to see another Marvel HERo totally kick butt and show she is just as fierce as the boys… probably even fiercer! I mean… there is a reason Nick Fury calls on her to help save the day, right?
It was just earlier this year we were all geeking out over Carol Danvers’ hero ego being hinted at in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. Okay, well she wasn’t just hinted at. We saw her emblem and knew she was finally join Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
But let’s get to the reason of why you clicked this link… the trailer!!
We first see Brie Larson as Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel falling through the sky in her Starforce uniform. Once she crashes, we realize two things thanks to the Blockbuster sign. She’s landing on Earth, and it’s not present day!!
Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ CAPTAIN MARVEL is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.
Knowing this film takes place before the Avengers get together, it’s no surprise to see both Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg as Nick Fury (with two eyes!) and Phil Coulson in their younger years (thanks to today’s “youngified” technology).
We also get a look Jude Law portrays Walter Lawson / Mar-Vell, the commander of the Starforce (who if you read the comics, know that he was once the original Captain Marvel).
For those wondering why Captain Marvel would punch a little old lady in the face… well you need to read up on the shape-shifting Skrulls! Knowing that Captain Marvel is one of the good heroes, but guess is that’s a Skrull she’s punching there, and not some innocent lady.
And yes I’m aware of the internet rumors that different characters we’ve grown to known in the MCU may or may not be Skrulls. Of course, this may or may not turn out to be true. Honestly, I have no idea. Given the comic history, it would not surprise me if a character we already know turns out to be Skrull. Secret Invasion, anyone?
But let’s rewind a bit to what the trailer showed us. It’s clear that part of the plot will revolve around Carol’s amnesia. Since she’s wearing the Starforce uniform when she crashes to Earth, I’m assuming she has yet to take on the Captain Marvel ego. She shares with Nick that she sees flashes of her life and memories of Earth (ie playing baseball and Air Force training).
Throughout watching the trailer, my son kept asking where is her blue and red suit. Over few seconds “but where is her suit?” Finally at the end we see Carol transform into her iconic suit, and boy did that make us more excited than ever for the film!
But did you also catch right before that Captain Marvel sporting her iconic mohawk of the modern day comics?
Carol often sported her long blonde hair during her Ms. Marvel days. While her with long hair in the Captain Marvel suit, I guess we’ll see come next March if she rocks her mohawk as Captain Marvel like her modern day comic book counter part (including this summer’s relaunch!), or if it was just during some of her time with Starforce.
The film also stars Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Rune Temte, Algenis Perez Soto, Mckenna Grace, with Annette Bening. Marvel Studios’ CAPTAIN MARVEL is produced by Kevin Feige and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Jonathan Schwartz, Patricia Whitcher and Stan Lee are the executive producers.
Now let’s go back to the movie poster. Did you catch what was in the corner there?
Here… I’ll lighten the image up for you!
It looks like a cat walking out of the frame, right? My educated guess is that it has to be Chewie, Carol’s cat who joined her in her galactic adventures. And there is so much I want to talk about in reference to Chewie right now! And if you read the comics, you probably know what I’m talking about. But movies don’t always follow the comics, right? So let’s just wait and see how big of a role Chewie plays in the film…
CAPTAIN MARVEL arrives in theatres everywhere on March 8th, 2019!
I received the above trailer as a blogger via Walt Disney Publications. All opinions are 100% my own.
