We’re inching closer and closer to the release of Marvel Studios’ CAPTAIN MARVEL! If you’re a regular reader, you know that we love to celebrate a film’s debut with an inspired recipe. Some of you may look at my recipe for the ‘Cheeseburger’ Boston Baked Beans Skillet and get the Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel references right away, while others may be scratching their heads. Either way, this dish is an ever-so-tasty way to pay homage to one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut.
Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ CAPTAIN MARVEL is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.
So let me rewind a little bit back to the time before Carol Danvers’ DNA fused with a Kree and she became Captain Marvel, one of the most powerful warriors around. Danvers was once a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot. Her call sign? Cheeseburger!
While we will certainly get a glimpse at her life as a pilot, I don’t know if the MCU will use her comic book call sign in the new film. Guess we’ll find out in March!
So that covers the explanation for the Cheeseburger part of the skillet recipe. But what about the Boston Baked Beans… Well in the comics, Danvers is born and raised in Beverly, MA, a suburb of Boston. And what dish is Boston known for? Boston Baked Beans!
So check out this delicious recipe for the CAPTAIN MARVEL inspired ‘Cheeseburger’ Boston Baked Beans Skillet!
Ingredients
Baked Beans
2 cans of baked beans
1/4 cup of molasses
4 tablespoons of brown sugar
2 tablespoons of ketchup
2-4 slices of bacon, chopped
Other Ingredients
1 lb of lean ground beef
Half of a medium sized onion, chopped
6-8 slices of bacon, cooked and chopped
1 can (8 oz) of tomatoc sauce
1/3 cup of ketchup
1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese
1 can of refrigerated biscuits
Black pepper to taste
Optional: Sloppy Joe seasoning
Directions
First let’s make the Boston Baked Beans. Preheat your over to 350 degrees. Mixed your baked beans with the molasses, brown sugar, ketchup, and bacon. Place it in a greased baking dish, and bake until thick, which can take up to 3 hours.
Then preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Next, in large saucepan, brown your beef, adding in the onions, on high heat until cooked all the way. Go ahead and drain the fat off. Reduce the heat to low, and stir in your tomato sauce, ketchup, and add the black pepper to taste. You can add in the Sloppy Joe seasoning if desired. Let it simmer for a few minutes, and then finally stir in the bacon.
In a large iron skillet, add your beef mixture around the sides, so that it creates a ring, with a “hole” in the middle. In that space, add in your finished Boston Baked Beans.
Take the refrigerated biscuits, and cut each piece into four quarters. Take the now smaller pieces and place them around the inside edge of the skillet, on top of the beef mixture. Sprinkle your shredded cheddar cheese on top of the beans. Now your skillet is ready to bake!
Bake for 13 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown. Once that is done, your dish is ready!
Spoon out the mixture into a bowl for a cheesy “burger” meal! Make sure you grab one of the biscuits.
As it’s been below 20 degrees lately here in Maryland, I love making this dish on a cold night. The skillet meal quickly warms you up!
The best part? It’s super easy to make! And it’s super tasty!
Now if you are wondering why is there a cat in the photos above… well, his name is Goose (yes it was Chewy in the comics), and he plays a part in the MCU! But guess you’ll find out how when CAPTAIN MARVEL arrives in theatres March 8…
And speaking of Captain Marvel…
