Marvel Entertainment made the announcement over the weekend at the San Diego Comic-Con during their Hall H presentation: Brie Larson officially is Captain Marvel! Fans have been on pins and needles waiting for this casting announcement. The Oscar winning actress will star as Air Force officer (turned superhero) Carol Danvers in an upcoming standalone film.
Carol Danvers’ Backstory
For those unfamiliar with Carol’s backstory, let me tell you a little bit about it. Not I have no idea what aspects the film will cover and what direction Marvel decides to go… but when Carol first appeared in the comics, she was seen working as a pilot and Security Chief of a restricted military base. It is at that base, she meets the alien Kree hero Captain Marvel (yes Kree as in the alien race which was lead by Ronan the Accuser in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY.)
Carol is later caught in the explosion of a Kree device. Though Captain Marvel saves her life, their DNA merges, giving Carol her super powers! She then assumes the Ms. Marvel name, and appeared in various AVENGERS comic series. In 2012, she became Captain Marvel. If you read CIVIL WAR II, which came out last month, you’ll know that she played a HUGE role.
Though Carol has engaged with the Avengers (and was even on the main Avengers team), they are not the only group of heroes she’s involved with in the comic world. In 2014, Carol actually joined the Guardians of the Galaxy! I wonder if Captain Marvel will be the one to bring the Avengers and Guardians together in the Marvel Cinematic Universe… Hmmmmm…
The Captain Marvel film is being planned for the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is currently set to hit theaters in March 2019.
