Part of the journey is the end… While I’m not ready for a number of our favorite MCU characters to exit the franchise, Marvel has gifted us fans with some amazing footage this week. It was just Monday night that we were treated to another trailer for Marvel Studios’ CAPTAIN MARVEL. And then this morning we received another amazing gift from Marvel… the AVENGERS 4 trailer!!! What makes this “gift” even more amazing is that we FINALLY found out the official title for the film… AVENGERS: ENDGAME!
Now before I dive into my initial reactions… WATCH THE TRAILER!
AVENGERS: ENDGAME TRAILER
So where do I even begin??? The trailer starts off with Tony right after the aftermath of INFINITY WAR, where him and Nebula found themselves stranded, as they were the last ones left alive on Titan. It looks like they are floating through space, as their resources sadly run out. I’ll admit, it hit me right in the feels, right off the bat with his message to Pepper, and the absolute look of defeat. Part of the journey is the end he says. And cue tears welling up in my eyes.
In INFINITY WAR, but a quick second, you see Thanos “scarecrow” in the bottom corner of the screen once he settles on the farm. This is a famous scene taken from the INFINITY GAUNTLET comic. The AVENGERS: ENDGAME trailer confirms that Thanos’ armor is truly now nothing but more than a scarecrow, as he lives in “retirement” as nothing more than just a farmer. However, from the trailer, I take it that Thanos is struggle with this, not really knowing if he has purpose in life anymore.
Now did I just see this scene right? Shuri did not survive the snap? Noooooo! I love what her character brought to the MCU as a strong intelligent role model. I’m just going to hope that maybe this trailer is tricking us (remember Thor with two eyes in RAGNAROK?) and it’s not really Shuri’s image in this scene.
The trailer also confirms that Clint Barton is back, but now as Ronin! The trailer suggests that his family did not survive the snap, which is why he takes on the Ronin identity. From the looks of Black Widow’s reaction, Ronin has embraced his dark side, and once again returns to his assassin ways.
Also in the trailer, we learn that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes indeed have a plan. While Black Widow and Captain America don’t straight out say the plan, they do indicate they have something up their sleeve. Prior to the trailer’s release, many fans suggested that the Avengers would use time travel in the upcoming film to either undo Thanos snap or defeat Thanos in some capacity. I think the conversation in this scene indicate that time travel is a strong possibility.
Which brings me now to the film’s title… In INFINITY WAR, Doctor Strange famously uses the Time Stone to look into the future to see if the Avengers can defeat Thanos. He saw 14,000,605 possibilities. Out of those, he only sees one where the Avengers are victorious. Later in the film, Doctor Strange hands the Time Stone over to Thanos. When Tony asks him why he did that, Strange replies, “We’re in the end game, now.” It was my assumption while watching the film that Strange knew he had to hand over the Time Stone for that one possibility to work where the Avengers “win”. I find ENDGAME to be the PERFECT title for this AVENGERS installment!
After the title is revealed, we then see… Scott! For those who saw ANT-MAN AND THE WASP, you’ll know that Scott was left trapped in the Quantum Realm when his colleagues with the ability to pull him out of the realm, Hope, Hank, and Janet Van Dyne, did not survive the snap. Now if you remember back to the scene with Bruce looking at images of those who did not survive, Scott is clearly shown on the deceased list. Everyone who knew that he was actually in the Quantum Realm are gone. Thus Black Widow and Cap’s surprise when Scott shows up at the HQ.
But more importantly… how did Scott escape the Quantum Realm??? I have a feeling the Quantum Realm will end up playing a huge role in this film. My guess is that it will end up tying into the Avenger’s plan, maybe tying into the time vortexes that Janet has mentioned before.
The MCU has been building up the Quantum Realm’s importance in other films. And I actually think it will play a role in CAPTAIN MARVEL too. As I mentioned in my CAPTAIN MARVEL trailer post from the other day, I’m going to side with the theory that the White Hole where Carol pulls the energy to go binary, is actually the Quantum Realm! I’m really looking forward to seeing how (and if!) the Quantum Realm and Captain Marvel play into the Avengers plan in ENDGAME.
But I guess I won’t find out till April 2019!
