Last night I went to a showing of AVENGERS: ENDGAME with my son. Honestly, I don’t even know where to begin. The movie was everything I hoped it would be, and then more. After the viewing, friends (who hadn’t seen it yet) asked me what I thought. I told them I’m still processing everything. I didn’t want to reveal any spoilers, rambling out my feelings on the 3+ hours I spent with the MCU as this chapter came to an end. I will say, ENDGAME is this perfect visual love letter to not only the original six Avengers, but also to us MCU fans. I told my friends the bottom line is… you MUST see this movie, and you MUST seen it on the big screen.
And I told them to take tissues, because even I cried. Twice. I cried more than I did while watching INFINITY WAR, but I also laughed more than I did when watching INFINITY WAR. During the ENDGAME journey, you will get emotion, deep raw emotion. But there are moments to keep it a fun ride. And I can’t tell you how many times the audience clapped and cheered throughout the film! I don’t want to reveal those moments, but one was Stan Lee‘s last cameo in the MCU.
Easter Eggs?
Yes, the film is packed with Easter Eggs from the comics, and call backs to previous MCU films. Many familiar faces show up, and like a trip down memory lane with the characters you’ve loved (and loved to hate!) during the previous 21 films. I really wish I could tell you some of my favorite Easter Egg tidbits!! But that might reveal too much info. So I’ll only mention one. Remember the Elevator Scene in CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER? There is a short tribute to that scene in the film. Don’t worry, it’s not a blink and you’ll miss tribute. But it was PERFECT. And honestly, so many moments in this film were just perfect.
The End?
ENDGAME does provide closure, I will say that. I strongly believe that a majority of MCU fans will walk out the theatre satisfied with how the Infinity Stones saga ends. And the climatic battle scene? WOW. It absolutely was everything I wanted (and of course more). As you know, the MCU itself is not finished. We still have SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME (July 2, 2019), as well as MCU release dates that don’t yet have titles attached to them:
- May 1, 2020
- July 31, 2020
- November 6, 2020
- February 12, 2021
- May 7, 2021
- November 5, 2021
- February 18, 2022
- May 6, 2022
- July 29, 2022
Don’t forget, Disney+ streaming service will launch later this year. Several MCU related limited series were announced, including The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Loki, and an untitled Hawkeye centered series. Keep in mind there is no confirmation of where in the MCU timeline these series take place.
Can Kids See It?
My 8 year old has seen all 21 MCU films leading up to ENDGAME. He had zero issues watching this film. I would say the intense action scenes are the same as in any other Marvel Studios’ film. There is one sequence where one character is quite brutal. More brutal than his usual self. It’s the “Tokyo” scene, if you would like to cover your young child’s eyes.
The swear word count is higher than usual for an MCU film, fair warning. But it wasn’t anything so foul.
I think it’s a given that this film deals with death, like INFINITY WAR, as well as grief. It’s a heavy topic. An especially heavy topic for a young child to grasp and understand. The Avengers lost in INFINITY WAR. They lost in a big way. This film focuses on the aftermath, and how they deal with that failure. The theme of grief is ever present, along with all the emotions that come with it.
After Credits?
So there isn’t an After Credits Scene in the traditional sense. Us MCU fans have been trained to stay through the credits and wait for a tease or glimpse into the MCU’s future. You won’t get that. However that doesn’t mean you should get up and leave right when the credits start to roll.
First, I will say that during the credits, there is a beautiful tribute to the original six and the actors who portrayed them during the last decade. Then after the traditional credits roll, you will see the Marvel Studios logo, with a very special “sound.” I won’t say what it is, but I recognized it right away, and it was absolutely the most perfect tribute to include at the end of this film.
Okay so that’s my ramble on ENDGAME. I want to tell you more! I want to chat about this film all day with you! Trust me I do. But #DontSpoilTheEndgame. It’s worth it to go into this film spoiler-free.
Just make sure you pack tissues, even if you think you are stoic enough not to shed a tear. Oh and the 3+ hour running time? It feels more like an hour and half. You’ll be too entranced with what is on the big screen to even think about going to the bathroom. (But yes still go to the bathroom before you grab your seat. You don’t want to miss a thing!).
