Cure Those Back-to-School Jitters! ~ #BacktoSchool

© Dana Rothstein | Dreamstime.com

With summer coming close to an end, this means school is not too far off! Actually the local kids around here go back next week. So close!

While many of the children head back into the classroom, my son is doing something similar… he’s heading off to day care! To me, this is kind of like sending my baby off to school. While I’m sure I’m probably more nervous than he is, there is still the unfamiliarity. So let’s think about how we can cure those Back to School Jitters!

Visit the classroom prior

One of the most important cures in my opinion, is meeting the teacher and visiting the classroom beforehand. Unfortunately, the public school system where I live, does not allow this except for new transfers. Teachers are posted literally the Friday before kids return to school on Monday. However, this isn’t all school systems. It’s just what I’ve witness here in my town.

Prior to taking my son to his day care, we visited there one afternoon. While I chatted with the provider, he was allowed to explore and play with the toys. He opted to “read” a Clifford the Big Red Dog book and play with some Thomas the Tank toys. When I dropped him off for actual care, I could see that this prior visit helped tremendously! My advice? If your child seems nervous, call the school and ask if they can see the classroom, see where their desk will be. Maybe even take a quick peek into the cafeteria, gym, etc. The worst they can do is say no. However, the best they can do is say yes and help put your child at ease.

Shop Back to School and Help Boys & Girls Club of America! ~ #BGCA

School is right around the corner! In fact, the local kids go back next week. If you haven’t already bought your school supplies, then now is the time. Does your child have the perfect “Back to School” outfit and fashion? So much to think about and so much to get ready for! It can be a busy and chaotic time. It is always nice to have a helping hand during this “Back to School” time. Now my son still has another year before heading to preschool, but I’m still using these Back to School sales to load up on “school” items he can use here at home. I’m sure when he really heads to school, as a working mom, I’m going to need some help getting him ready. Luckily, there are groups like the Boys and Girls Club of America, that offer great programs to assist families in need during this time.

Growing up in Annapolis, the Boys and Girls Club of America had a heavy presence in our town. I always saw fliers for them and or advertisements in our local paper. However, it wasn’t until I started living in Rhode Island part time did I fully grasp the benefits of this group. My home is located right next to the local chapter of the Club. I firsthand witnessed the staff arriving so early in the morning to prepare for the students, and staying so late for Club sponsored events like dances and parties. I would see children happily walk up those stairs after school, and leave with the biggest smiles on their faces when it was time to go home. Many of the children who participate in the Boys and Girls Club of America are underprivileged and need assistance with school, food, clothing, and even love. The Club does such amazing work, that is why I am so excited to share with my readers about how you can help this amazing group.

Rock ‘N Learn DVD ~ Sight Words ~ #Review & #Giveaway ~ 9 Winners ~ #karmamedia

Back in February I had the privilege of reviewing Rock “N Learn’s Letter Sounds. When they offered the opportunity to check out one of their latest DVDs, Sight Words, I immediately said yes! Sometimes the flash cards, singing songs, “reading” a book just don’t cut it with him. As he is always interested in the big colorful moving pictures on the television in our living room, I’m always on the look out for any educational DVD for him to watch. This is exactly why I was thrilled to learn about Rock N Learn! Their series is not only educational and beneficial to a child’s mind, but they are also fun and keep the attention focused.

About Rock N Learn

Rock ‘N Learn began as an idea that would help children learn by putting educational material to music with a current sound — the kind of music that kids enjoy and find motivating. Now with over 50 products, we have sold millions of audio/book and video programs to teachers and parents throughout the United States, Canada, and other countries. The Mommy Mindset: Conversation on Homeschooling

Every so often, I team up with some fabulous Mommy bloggers on Facebook to discuss “current events” of parenting and mommyhood! This week’s topic was about Homeschooling. While I don’t homeschool, and do not plan on it, it was quite an interesting discussion! Check out some highlights below. This week’s moms include Cyndy from Mama Does It All, Ashley (Me) from Maryland Momma’s Rambles & Reviews, Darcy from Tales From the Nursery, Kathleen from Callista’s Ramblings, Heather from Full Price? Never!, Ghada from Mama Goes BAM, LaVonne from Long Wait for Isabella, Mariah from Formula Mom, Lena from Way2Goodlife, and Emily from Nap Time is My Time.

The Mommy Mindset: Homeschooling

Cyndy: Gwen is about to be 4 years old and currently attends preschool two days each week. We do a lot of educational activities with her but not necessarily in a formal or planned way. She will be old enough to start kindergarten in August 2013 (God help me!) and so we are already starting to explore our options: Public school, private school, home school full-time, home school co-op….I’d love to know if anyone has been through this decision process and/or is going to go through this process – lessons learned, things to consider, etc. This is a road I have not been down before.

Ashley: I am very happy with the public and private school options in my town for elementary age and younger. While homeschooling would not fit with my family, I do know several parents who have opted to join home school co-ops and they couldn’t be happier with their decisions. There is such a personality change, for the better, in their children. Every family and every child’s needs are different. Try to think of where your daughter will thrive the most. Best of luck in your decision-making!
